The Layland Family Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor the legacy of a dedicated industry leader. This fund supports educational initiatives and scholarships within the power transmission industry.
For over 70 years and three generations, the Layland family has been part of the gear manufacturing industry through Precision Gage Company. This scholarship is established in memory of Roger Layland Sr., The company’s second-generation leader and in honor of the family’s continued commitment to the craft. The Layland Family Memorial Scholarship honors that legacy by supporting the next generation of students pursuing careers in gear manufacturing, with a particular interest in precision measurement and quality inspection.
Roger Layland dedicated much of his career to advancing the science and standards of gear inspection. As President of Precision Gage Company, he built a business rooted in precision measurement, but his influence reached far beyond his own company — through nearly three decades of volunteer service on the technical committees that shape how gears are inspected and evaluated across the industry.
A Legacy of Committee Service
Roger’s involvement with AGMA’s technical committees began in 2002, when he joined the Calibration Committee and the Inspection & Handbook Committee. As those committees evolved and were incorporated into the Gear Accuracy Committee (now the Accuracy and Nomenclature Committee), Roger remained a steady and active participant, contributing his expertise from 2006 through 2022. He also lent his knowledge to the Plastic Gearing Committee, attending meetings in 2014 and 2015.
Across two decades of volunteer service, Roger brought the practical, real-world perspective of a gage manufacturer to the standardization process — helping ensure that the standards produced were not only technically sound, but usable by the industry they served.
